Schilling was the director of the Rockefeller Institute of Occupation Health in London from 1956 to 1976. He was born in Suffolk in 1911 and studied medicine at St Thomas's Hospital, London. Schilling started of in general practice with his father, but a lack of opportunities led him to take a post as an industrial medical officer, marking the start of his illustrious career. He served in France during the War, but was recalled to his civilian post and became secretary to the Industrial Health Research Board of the Medical Research Council. In 1947, Schilling joined the department of occupational health at the University of Manchester. This was a time of great developments in the study of occupational health and Schilling was involved in a field study which led to international studies of textile workers and byssinosis. Schilling then became director of the Rockefeller Institute where he took a major role in the development of teaching. Schilling died on 30 September 1997.
