Shrigley was a medical graduate of the University of Manchester where he was demonstrator in the department of bacteriology. He was assistant pathologist to Christie Hospital, Withington Hospital and Oldham Hospital Group before being appointed consultant pathologist to Rochdale and District Hospital Group. Shrigley was a member of the Association of Clinical Pathologists and Manchester Medical Society.
