Urmson (later Vera Smith) received her medical education at the University and held resident appointments at St Mary's Hospital, Manchester, MRI and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Although Urmson married in 1930, to Edward Gillespy Smith, she continued to practice under her maiden name.
