Shaw gained his medical education at the University of Manchester and held junior appointments at MRI and Salford Royal Hospital. He was assistant county medical officer for Essex before being appointed deputy chief medical officer to the Department of Health and Social Security. Shaw was also honorary physician to HM the Queen. Shaw was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and the Society of Medical Officers of Health.
