Schofield was born in Huddersfield on 23 January 1930. He gained his medical education at the University of Manchester and held resident appointments at Crumpsall Hospital, Ancoats Hospital, Christie Hospital, Salford Royal Hospital and MRI. Schofield was a member of Manchester Medical Society. He spent a year as a research scholar in Ohio and was Hunterian Lecturer for the Royal College of Surgeons in 1964. Schofield was consultant surgeon to West Manchester Hospital Group and Ashton, Hyde and Glossop Hospitals Group before being appointed consultant surgeon to the University Hospital of South Manchester and honorary reader at the University of Manchester.
