Southam was educated at the Universities of Brussels and Edinburgh, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was consulting physician to the Malvern Hydropathic Institute at Bowden, and was also honorary RMO tot he MRI and medical officer in charge of Hale Auxiliary Red Cross Hospital. Southam died on 19 May 1945 aged 83. In his will he left money to MRI and other charities.
