Whitehouse studied anatomy and medicine at the University of Manchester, gaining his BSc in 1978, MB ChB in 1981, and MD in 1993. He held house appointments in Salford, Manchester and Doncaster before being appointed registrar in radiology in Manchester in 1983. Whitehouse was later appointed consultant radiologist to Central Manchester Health Authority and was honorary clinical lecturer in diagnostic radiology at the University of Manchester. Whitehouse was a member of the British Institute of Radiology and a fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists.
