Sutherland was born on 14 July 1893 and gained his medical education at Manchester, Middlesex and St Bartholomew's. He served in the RAMC, was demonstrator in anatomy at the University of Manchester and held resident appointments at MRI before being appointed surgical registrar. He was a honorary assistant surgeon at MRI in 1934 and became an honorary surgeon in 1942. Sutherland was also honorary surgeon to Stockport Infirmary and to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and consulting surgeon to a number of cottage hospitals in charities. Sutherland was lecturer in applied anatomy to the University of Manchester. He was a member of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Manchester Medical and Pathological Societies. Sutherland retired from the MRI in 1959. Sutherland died on 23 May 1962.
