Rood qualified in dentistry from the University of Durham and in medicine from the University of Newcastle. He was professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Manchester from 1982-1998. Rood was a consultant at the GKT Dental Institute at King's College Dental Hospital, London from 1998.
