Sharpe decided early on to pursue a career in public health, and was RMO at Monsall Fever Hospital and assistant medical officer of health for Derby. In 1911 he was appointed medical officer of health for Chesterfield, and four years later to Barnsley. Sharpe was medical officer of health, school medical officer, and tuberculosis officer from 1920 until his death. He was president of the North-Western Branch of the Society of Medical Officers of Health. Sharpe died on 21 February 1945.
