Tattershall studied medicine at St Bartholomew's and was physicians assistant at MRI from 1866 to 1867. He was resident junior medical officer to the Manchester Royal Lunatic Asylum in Cheadle before going to Woolton, Liverpool, where he was medical officer of health and surgeon to the dispensary.
