Seed was born in Manchester on 23 March 1902. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Seed held resident appointments at MRI and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital before settling in general practice in Withington, Manchester. He served as a major in the RAMC from 1939 to 1945. Seed was a member of Manchester Medical Society.
