Talbot was originally in agriculture, having gained a diploma in agriculture and dairying in 1912. He entered the University of Manchester as a zoology student, and after gaining his degree studied medicine. Talbot was orthopaedic house surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital, casualty officer at Ancoats Hospital and senior assistant medical officer at Crumpsall Infirmary before being appointed AMO to the County Mental Hospital in Prestwich, where he was later medical superintendent. Talbot was lecturer in mental diseases at the University of Manchester and was honorary psychiatrist to mental health clinics at Hope Hospital and Oldham Royal Infirmary. Talbot was a member of Manchester Medical Society and of the Royal Medico Psychological Association.
