Scott gained his medical education at Edinburgh and Manchester Universities and was clinical assistant to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He was house surgeon to the Clinical Hospital for Women and Children in Manchester before settling in general practice in Withington. Scott was an associate of Owens College, a member of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh, a fellow of the Royal Physical Society Edinburgh and honorary secretary of the Manchester and Salford Sanitary Association.
