The daughter of Sir Arthur Schuster, Norah Schuster was born on 14 July 1892 and gained her medical education at the University of Manchester and at MRI where she was encouraged by Edward Brockbank and Dr Edward Loveday, the pathologist. In 1916 she was appointed assistant pathologist at MRI, and was possibly the first medical woman to be given an appointment at the hospital (women doctors were barred from resident appointments at the time). Schuster married Marriott Fawckner Nicholls in 1925 but practised under her maiden name. Schuster left Manchester after qualifying and held junior appointments at the Queen's Hospital for Children, Hackney Road, and St George's Hospital. She was pathologist at the Infants Hospital Vincent Square and assistant curator at the Museum of St George's Hospital. In 1927 Schuster was appointed pathologist to the Royal Chest Hospital, London. She also worked for the Emergency Medical Service, and at Pinewood Hospital, Berkshire. Schuster was a founder fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and was president of the Association of Clinical Pathologists in 1950. Schuster died on 14 March 1991.
