Will, the son of a consultant physician in Glasgow, gained his medical education at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1978 and gaining his Medical Directory in 1991. He held resident appointments in Glasgow and Manchester and in 1984 became registrar in haematology at Hope Hospital Salford. Will was research fellow in bone marrow transplantation at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Christie Hospital Manchester and research fund lecturer in paediatric haematology and oncology at Christie Hospital before being appointed consultant paediatric haematologist and director of bone marrow transplantation at the Children's Hospital in 1992. Will gained his MRCP in 1983 and MRCPath in 1991. He was a member of the British Society of Haematology, the Manchester Paediatric Club and the North West Haematology Society.
