Stenhouse was educated in Edinburgh and was house surgeon to Leith Hospital and medical officer in charge of Clyn House Military Hospital. He was later surgeon to the Royal Residential Schools for the Deaf in Old Trafford and medical officer to Henshaw's Institute for the Blind. Stenhouse was a member of Manchester Medical and Pathological Societies. He was awarded an MBE.
