Sandler was born in Salford on 28 March 1926 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Sandler held resident appointments at Withington Hospital, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Preston Royal Infirmary. After serving in the RAMC as junior specialist in pathology, Sandler was appointed to the Brompton Hospital, first as house physician and later as research assistant. Sandler was later appointed consultant in chemical pathology at Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital, London. Sandler was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the Association of Clinical Pathologists.
