Tytler was brn in 1850 in Aberdeenshire and gained his medical education at Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Paris. After acting as resident medical assistant at Aberdeen Royal Asylum, Tytler came to Manchester in 1873 as house surgeon to Manchester Northern Hospital. He rapidly developed a substantial practice in Cheetham Hill. In 1876, Tytler was appointed honorary surgeon at Ancoats Hospital, where he worked until ill-health caused him to resign in 1916. Tytler died on 9 April 1921, aged 72.
