Sheldon was born in Manchester on 9 October 1874. He gained his medical education at Owens College and in 1898 was appointed demonstrator in anatomy. Sheldon was house surgeon at MRI before being appointed district medical officer to Burma Railway. His brother, Hugh Frederick Sheldon (see above), also practised medicine.
