Rains studied at Manchester Royal School of Medicine and qualified in 1853. In 1860 he received the MD for King's College, Aberdeen. He was in practice in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester. He was the brother of Samuel Rains, and uncle of Robert Harding Rains.
