Schofield was born in Old Trafford, Manchester, on 30 May 1916. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester and held junior appointments at St Mary's Hospital and Christie Hospital, Manchester before serving in the RAMC. After demobilisation, Schofield was appointed resident anaesthetist at MRI, later promoted to registrar and senior registrar. In 1950, he was appointed consultant anaesthetist to South Manchester Hospitals. When the Hospitals became the University Hospital of South Manchester in 1970, Schofield continued as consultant, but was also lecturer in anaesthetics. Schofield was a member of Manchester Medical Society and the Association of Anaesthetists. Schofield retired in 1981, and died on 19 November 2000.
