Somerford, the son of Mr R. Sommerhalder, was educated at Manchester Grammar School and at the University of Manchester and was awarded the Bradley Surgical Scholarship. He held resident appointments at MRI and Manchester and Salford Skin Hospital before settling in consulting practice as a dermatologist. Somerford was also AMO at Ancoats Hospital, St Luke's Hospital and at the Manchester and Salford Hospital for Skin Diseases. He was later consultant dermatologist at Withington Hospital, and honorary physician in dermatology to Bolton Royal Infirmary, MRI and Salford Royal Infirmary. Somerford was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He was honorary secretary to the North of England Dermatological Society and treasurer of Manchester Medical Society from 1935 to 1939. His wife, Marian Maxwell Somerford, née Reekie, was also a Manchester medical graduate and was on the staff at St Mary's Hospital (see MMC/2/ReekieM).
