Watkins graduated at the University of Manchester in 1927 (he took the honours degrees of both Manchester and London Universities). A successful student, who won many medical prizes, Watkins worked at MRI, Salford Royal and the Christie Hospitals. In 1932 he was awarded a Rockefeller fellowship, and studied at Johns Hopkins University. In 1934 he became a chief assistant at MRI where he specialized in urological surgery. He was also a honorary genito-urinary surgeon at Manchester Northern Hospital and Christie Hospital Manchester. He died as a result of a road accident in Germany in 1938.
