Michael Satterthwaite came from a Quaker family, his father came to Manchester as a boot and shoe maker, and Michael was born on 24 August 1812. Satterthwaite gained his medical education in Edinburgh at the University and the Royal College of Surgeons, his thesis being on 'Pathological chemistry'. He possibly followed this with a period of obstetrical study in Dublin. From 1844 to 1847 Satterthwaite was physician at MRI. He then joined his future brother-in-law to run a boys' boarding school in Preston. The school later moved to Alderley, where Satterthwaite died on 14 September 1861. Satterthwaite was related by marriage to the Brockbank family.
