Willan gained his medical qualifications from the University of Birmingham. He was surgical registrar to the University Hospital of South Manchester before being appointed senior lecturer in anatomy to the University of Manchester. Willan was a fellow of the British Association of Clinical Anatomists and a member of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain.
