Schofield was born in Mossley and studied medicine at Owens College. After qualifying he held junior appointments at Bradford Royal Infirmary, Sheffield Royal Hospital and City Hospital Sheffield. Schofield then settled in general practice in Stockport, where he worked for nearly 40 years, and was appointed senior honorary surgeon to Stockport Infirmary. Schofield was twice chairman of the Stockport Division of the BMA and was chairman of the local Medical War Committee. He died on 7 July 1946.
