Shalet was educated at the London Hospital and graduated in 1969. He in a consultant physician and endocrinologist for the University Hospital of South Manchester. He has been president of the endocrine section of the Royal Society of Medicine. In 1994 Shalet was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Manchester.
