Trayer studied medicine at the University of Dublin before coming to Manchester to gain qualifications and experience in public health. He was house surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital, AMO at Monsall Hospital Manchester and medical superintendent to Romsley Hill Sanatorium before being appointed medical superintendent to Baguley Sanatorium. Trayer was a member of the Society of Medical Officers of Health and the Society of Superintendents of Tuberculosis Institutions. He died on 4 January 1975, aged 85.
