Taylor was born in Prestwich in 1914, the son of a pharmacist, Robert Whitaker Taylor. He was educated at Warrington Grammar School and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Taylor served in the RAMC and then held junior surgical appointments at Salford Royal Hospital. Taylor then held orthopaedic registrar appointments at MRI and Warrington Infirmary before working in general practice in Warrington. Taylor was a fellow of Manchester Medical Society.
