Whitehead studied medicine at the University of Manchester. In 1932 he was appointed assistant lecturer in pathology. His early research interest was on the adrenal glands, which he studied at the University of Rochester, New York in 1938-9. At the time of his death he was reader in pathology at the University of Manchester.
