Ralphs graduated from the University of Manchester in 1904. He was in practice in Ashton-under-Lyne and was for many years Manchester county coroner. He was also a honorary surgeon at Ashton-under-Lyne Infirmary, and a visiting surgeon at Ashton-under-Lyne Union Hospital.
