Howson Ray studied medicine at Owens College, where he was a notably successful student, qualifying in 1894. He took the M.Ch in 1896. He worked at MRI and Salford Royal, where he was appointed consultant surgeon in 1898. He was also a school medical officer for Salford and a visiting surgeon at the Manchester Children's hospital. In 1905 he was elected to the honorary staff of MRI. During the First World War he worked at the 2nd Western General Hospital in Manchester and commanded the hospital in the post-war period. He retired from the MRI in 1930.
