Shreeve was born in Rochdale on 27 April 1937 and was educated at Bury and Rochdale Grammar Schools. He qualified in medicine at the University of Manchester and held resident appointments at Ancoats Hospital, Oldham and District General Hospital, Crumpsall Hospital and MRI. He was lecturer in medicine at MRI in 1966 and the following year was local medical assistant to Oldham Hospitals before being appointed senior registrar to United Manchester Hospital in the late 1960s. He was later consultant physician to North Manchester Health Authority. Shreeve was a member of Manchester Medical Society and of the Rochdale Literary and Scientific Society. He was also a member of the British Society for Gastroenterology and the British Diabetic Association. He has published a number of papers on gastroenterology and the history of medicine.
