Wells gained his medical education at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1975. He was senior registrar in histopathology to hospitals in Manchester and Salford, and in 1983 was appointed consultant histopathologist to Bolton Health Authority. Wells gained his FRCPath in 1993 and was a member of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and the Association of Clinical Pathologists.
