Thompson was born in Liverpool on 6 April 1901, and became a well respected doctor in the area. She trained at the University of Liverpool and held resident appointments at Liverpool Stanley Hospital and Liverpool Maternity Hospital. Thompson was Holt Fellow in Pathology at the University of Manchester. From 1948 to 1966 She was consultant anaesthetist to North Lancashire and South Westmorland Hospitals. After retirement, she was a member of the courts of the Universities of Lancaster and Liverpool. Thompson was president of the anaesthetics section of the Manchester Medical Society. She was also honorary life member of the Liverpool Medical Institution and of the North of England Gynaecological and Obstetrical Society.
