Administrative / Biographical History

Watkins was born in Nelson, Lancashire, and studied pharmacology and medicine at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1974. He held resident appointments in Manchester and in 1979 became registrar, later senior registrar, in community medicine to the North West Regional Health Authority. Watkins gained his MSc in community medicine in 1982 and was later appointed director of public health for Stockport Health Authority. He has also been a honorary lecturer in publis health and epidemiology at the University of Manchester.
