Ralston graduated at the University of Manchester in 1956. He was a consultant physician at Withinton Hospital from 1968-96, and a honorary lecturer in medicine at the University (Dean of Clinical Studies 1980-7 and Chairman of the Board of Faculty of Medicine 1987-96). He published a number of articles on renal medicine.
