BSc Manch 1927, MB ChB 1930; FRCS 1938.

Margaret Mary Ferguson gained her medical education at the University of Manchester and held house appointments at St Mary's Hospital Manchester and Ancoats Hospital. She spent a year and resident medical officer at Jessop Hospital Annexe in Sheffield and two years as a demonstrator in anatomy at the University of Manchester. Ferguson married James Forrest Shepherd in 1938 and practised under her married name. She was resident surgical officer to Christie Hospital before serving in the RAMC as surgical specialist and was honorary surgeon to the King George Hospital in Madras. Shepherd later practised as a surgeon in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands.
