Smith was an important clinical pathologist. He was born on 30 October 1902 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester. In 1937 he was appointed director of pathology services for Manchester Municipal Hospitals and Home Office pathologist to the North-west Forensic Science Laboratory. Smith was particularly interested in medical administration and forensic pathology. In 1949 he left Manchester to become a consultant pathologist in Exeter, where he pioneered the development of pathology services. Smith was president of the Association of Clinical Pathologists and a founder fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. He was appointed OBE in 1974 and died on 24 August 1975.
