Sears was a general practitioner in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, for many years. He was born in London on 29 December 1919, the son of a doctor. He gained his medical education at St Thomas's Hospital. where he held junior and registrar appointments. In 1954, Sears entered general practice in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. The same year he was appointed clinical assistant tot he University Department of Medicine at MRI, initially to help Sir Robert Platt with his follow-up hypertensive treatment studies. Sears was later also clinical assistant at Cranage Hall Hospital, Holmes Chapel.
