Ritchie was a medical graduate of Edinburgh University. Originally he worked as a ship's surgeon, before becoming a GP in Hulme, Manchester, In 1905 he was appointed school medical officer for Manchester. Ritchie was active in the BMA and Medical Defence Union, and was a former vice-president of MMEA.
