Sengupta was born in West Bengal in 1919 and gained his medical education at Calcutta where he was prosector in anatomy. Sengupta served in the Royal Indian Army Medical Corps in India and abroad, and in 1947 returned to Calcutta Medical College as demonstrator in anatomy. Sengupta came to Britain in 1951 and was later appointed consultant anaesthetist to North Manchester General Hospital. Sengupta died on 22 October 1996 of left ventricular failure.
