Wilson gained his medical qualifications at King's College Hospital London in 1978. He became FRCR in 1986. Wilson held radiological registrar appointments in Hull, Leicester and Sweden before coming to Manchester in 1988 as consultant paediatric radiologist to Booth Hall Hospital, and later to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Wilson was honorary lecturer in the University of Manchester department of imaging science and biomedical engineering.
