Thomson was born on 1 August 1906 and gained his medical education in Aberdeen, where he held a resident post at Woodend Hospital. Thomson came to Manchester as house officer to Geoffrey Jefferson at Salford Royal Hospital. After discovering he was diabetic, Thomson changed his career from the surgical to the medical side, and held resident posts at Salford Royal Hospital, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Booth Hall Children's Hospital. In 1936, on gaining his MD, Thomson was appointed honorary assistant physician to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, and in 1946 became full physician. The following year he was appointed physician to the Booth Hall Children's Hospital. Thomson became a member of the British Paediatric Association in 1945 and was president of the Manchester Paediatric Club. He was also a member of the University of Manchester Department of Child Health from its inception in 1947. Although he specialised in paediatrics, Thomson was also a general physician on the staff of Salford Royal Hospital from 1943. Thomson had a strong interest in diabetes, he was a member of the British Diabetic Association, and at the tie of his death was engaged in a major research project into diabetic families. Thomson died on 7 June 1863.
