Smith gained his medical education at the University of Manchester, where he was editor of Manchester University Medical Students Gazette and president of the MSRC. He held junior appointments at MRI and Royal Salop Infirmary and was demonstrator of anatomy at the University of Manchester and at Cambridge before serving in the RAMC as general duty officer from 1940 to 1945. After the war, Smith held resident appointments at Salford Royal Hospital and MRI. From 1952 he was consultant physician to Macclesfield Hospital Group. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society. Smith died on 13 July 1990.
