Scott, known as 'Tommy' was part-time professor of Occupational Health at the University of Manchester. He gained his medical education at the University of Glasgow and held resident appointments at Bradford Royal Hospital, Miller General Hospital Greenwich, Wandsworth Maternity Hospital and St George in the East Hospital, London. From 1934 to 1950 Scott was a general practitioner in Manchester. He was also medical officer to a chemical manufacturer and an engineering company. In 1950 Scott took up industrial medicine full-time, working on cancerous tumours of the bladder among chemical workers. He was appointed honorary assistant lecturer in occupational health at the University of Manchester in 1958, becoming honorary lecturer in 1963 and professor in the mid 1960s.
