David Lloyd Roberts was born in Stockport and studied medicine at Manchester Royal School of Medicine. He took the LSA and conjoint diploma in 1857, and in 1858, was made surgeon at St. Mary's Hospital, Manchester, From 1885-1895 he was honorary gynaecologist at MRI. A successful practitioner, he published the Student's guide to midwifery (1876) which ran to several editions. Roberts was also a noted collector of works of art, many of which he left to Manchester City Art Gallery. His book collection was left to the Royal College of Physicians. He endowed five lectureships, three in London and two in Manchester.
