Stocks gained his medical education at Cambridge and Manchester. He was house physician and captain in the RAMC before being appointed medical officer to Manchester Children's Hospital. He was later assistant school medical officer for Cheshire County Council. Stocks was a member of Manchester Medical Society and the Society of Medical Officers of Health.
