Stewart studied medicine at Glasgow where he was prosector of anatomy. He was a general practitioner in Pendleton, near Manchester and was also an obstetric surgeon. Stewart held honorary appointments at Pendleton Ladies' Charity, Pendleton Provident Dispensary, Salford Home and Salford Sick-poor Nursing Institution. He donated a number of books to the Manchester Medical Society Library in 1914.
